That's all you need to know.
I know... I know. I watch too many, but this time it wasn't in a threatre!
So first, I was on Youtube watching Unicorn vs Narwhal [link] (which is totally funny, go click that link, click it!) when I saw a vid for The Last Unicorn in the related stuff. Well I thought to myself "You know, I hear about that movie a lot (yay for Labyrinth fandom) and people seem to really like it. I should watch it." So I did.
It SUH-UCKED! Oh my satan on a Popsicle stick it was terrible. Not the worst movie I've seen, but probably up there in the top ten. I have no idea why people think it's such a great movie! First off, the voice acting was okay, but not that great. A lot of it seemed... rather forced, though that could have been the dialogue. It wasn't bad dialogue, but it wasn't good either. And the quality of the dialogue ranged all over the place from okay to downright awful.
Secondly: the drawing style was beautiful, the animation was smooth, the actions of the characters was all over the place. There was a lot of needlessly repeated animations, such as the Unicorn kind of moving to and fro repeatedly when simply standing would have been more than enough. Everything is in constant motion, even when a character is described in dialogue as "standing completely still."
Thirdly: I don't know who "America" is (a band? a person?) but music was horrible. I actually skipped over parts of the film because I just couldn't stand to listen to the random songs they'd sprinkle where nothing was happening. Not nothing important, not nothing interesting, nothing was happening. It's like they used it to show the passage of time by throwing in a random song with ridiculous lyrics and panning over some countryside; no characters, no change in the countryside, just some trees and grass. Uninteresting trees at that.
Lastly: the plot. Oh ho... the plot. If you could condense the entire movie into one sentence or even a short paragraph then it was awesome. Example: A Unicorn finds out all the other Unicorns are trapped by an evil Red Bull and goes on an epic journey to find and rescue them. That's awesome, perhaps even epic of done right! So yeah, I like the over all concept. But as often happens with fanfics: not well executed. (No seriously, do you know how many fanfics I've started to read because the short description sounded like an epic idea but the author just has no writing skills at all? This movie is just that.) I mean... a lot of the characters have no apparent motivation for anything they're doing, there are a lot of random encounters of one time characters that are given names and a deeper backstory than the main character herself that disappear without a trace, and about half of the events in the movie serve nor purpose for the plot at all. Why did King Hagar even have a wizard if he was just going to say "You'll see me again," and then not be seen again? Ever. At all. For the rest of the movie. Oh wait, I think he disguised himself as the random talking cat that appeared after he disappeared and no one seems surprised by his being able to talk, but there's really no way to confirm or deny that. So yeah, a lot of random things happened for no reason, and I'm not even sure the characters really stayed in character through the whole movie. Seriously.
Now, I have not read the book, and I'm sure it's infitely better. But that doesn't change how much this movie was awful and since Hollywood loves doing remakes so much right now I say this is a prime candidate if only because it can't get worse. Well... it can't get worse without becoming so bad it's good. XP
Sometimes it's fun to draw characters in a different style that's distinctive to something else. I'd like to try my hand at drawing Ouran style, it's already rather close to what I can do.
